Faith and egos collide in the age of mass-market religion at Houston's Rock Baptist Church. Legendary pastor, 81-year-old Philip Gottschall, invites young Jeremiah Mears to audition for the job of replacing him. But as Jerry grows in popularity, Gottschall's grip on the pulpit becomes as firm as his faith. The pastor's soundman, Hugo Taney, a reformed wreck of a soul, builds a trusting relationship with young Jerry, further fuelling Gottschall's fears. The result is a Biblical struggle that erupts between this trinity of men.
